Energy Coaching for Burnout Recovery & Peak Performance: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

Feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or stuck in survival mode?

If you’re a high-achiever or professional constantly giving 110%, chances are you’ve brushed up against - or fallen fully into - burnout.

You’re not alone. In fact, the Financial Times recently published a timely piece, “Why exhaustion is not the same as burnout”, that highlights what many of us in this space already know: burnout isn’t just about being tired. It’s about a deeper, more systemic depletion of energy, purpose, and psychological safety.

As a member of the Financial Times Advisory Board for Women in Business Europe, I’m encouraged to see these conversations gaining mainstream traction. But awareness is just the beginning. What we need now are tools that create real, sustainable change.

And here’s the good news: you can recover and come back stronger. With the right support, energy coaching, and a mindset designed for resilience, you can shift from drained to dynamic, from burnout to breakthrough.

What is Energy Coaching?

Unlike general life coaching, energy coaching is a targeted, holistic approach that helps you identify and eliminate the invisible energy drains that are wearing you down.

It focuses on the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of performance and wellbeing, helping you build sustainable, long-term vitality.

Think of it as a personalised roadmap for how to manage your energy, not just your time, more effectively. Through tools like nervous system regulation, mindset reframing, and purposeful routines, energy coaching helps you move from burnout into balance and clarity.

Signs You Might Be Experiencing Burnout

Burnout is more than just being “tired” or “stressed”. It’s a physical and emotional state that affects how you think, feel and perform.

Common signs include:

  • Constant fatigue, even after rest

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Emotional detachment or numbness

  • Loss of motivation or drive

  • Feeling stuck in survival mode

  • Increased irritability or anxiety

Burnout isn’t a weakness… it’s a signal. Your body and brain are telling you something needs to change.

Practical Tips to Start Rebuilding Energy Today

Burnout recovery isn’t just about taking time off. It’s about making intentional, everyday shifts that support your energy, clarity and fulfilment - especially when you're working in high-pressure environments.

Here are five practical, research-backed strategies to start implementing now:

1. Redefine ‘Success’ Around Energy, Not Output

Instead of asking, “Did I do enough today?” try asking, “Did I protect my energy today?”
This small shift in self-reflection helps rewire your mindset from constant performance to sustainable success - and it's central to the Success and Confidence pillars in my E-Programme.

2. Create ‘Closure Rituals’ at the End of Your Day

Inspired by studies in occupational health psychology, having a structured sign-off, like journalling a short gratitude list, closing your laptop with intention, or going for a walk signals your brain that work is done. It also helps avoid the “digital bleed” between work and home life.

3. Use ‘Energy Anchors’ in Your Daily Routine

Energy anchors are small, repeating behaviours that ground your day, like starting your morning with 3 minutes of breathwork or stretching between meetings.
These are more effective than random bursts of self-care because they become part of your nervous system’s rhythm. This ties directly into the Routine and Focus & Discipline pillars of my coaching.

4. Recognise the Early Signals of Cognitive Fatigue

Performance drops long before total burnout. If you notice increased irritability, zoning out in meetings, or rereading the same line multiple times, it’s a sign your brain needs rest.
Try this: Take a 5–10 minute non-digital break (no phones!) every 90 minutes to restore mental clarity.

5. Have a Weekly ‘Clarity Check-In’

Once a week, reflect on:

  • What energised me this week?

  • What drained me?

  • What small change would support me next week?

This simple check-in activates the Clarity and Fulfilment pillar, and helps you make strategic, empowering adjustments before burnout takes hold.

These aren't just “nice to have” tips, they’re essential strategies for rebuilding sustainable energy and maintaining a healthy performance mindset. Want to go deeper? My full 6-Pillar E-Programme guides you through each area step by step.
