Feeling Confident Today?

Some days you wake up feeling unstoppable. You are ready for any challenge, any conversation. Other days, confidence feels like it is hiding behind a locked door. That is normal. Confidence is not a permanent state. It is something we build, lose, and rebuild over time.

The mistake is thinking you have to feel confident before you act. In reality, action is what often creates confidence.

A Story from the Stage

Before stepping on stage at a leadership conference, I felt my stomach knot up. I have spoken at countless events, but that does not mean the nerves vanish.

As I walked out, I focused on one thing: delivering value to the people in the room. Within a few minutes, the nerves began to fade. The confidence arrived after I started, not before.

As Winston Churchill said…

Confidence grows through repetition and showing yourself you can handle the moment. The more you act, the more evidence you have that you can do it.

How to Boost Confidence When You Need It

When pressure is high, waiting for confidence to show up can mean missing your window to act. You do not have time to wait for a feeling. Here is what to do instead.

1. Shift your focus outward.

Instead of thinking about how you are being judged, think about who you are helping. This immediately takes the pressure off of you and puts your focus on serving others.

2. Take a small action.

Even a single step forward builds momentum. The key is to start, not to be perfect. The act of moving forward gives your brain a positive feedback loop that you can handle this.

3. Revisit past wins.

Remind yourself of moments you handled well before. Keep a “win list” in your notebook or a note on your phone. This is your personal bank of evidence that you are more than capable.

4. Prepare, then let go.

Do the work in advance, then trust yourself to deliver in the moment. You do not need to be perfect. You just need to be prepared enough to show up and give it your best shot.

Confidence is built in motion, not in stillness.
